The Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) is a military award for' distinguished service of a high order', and is open to all ranks of officers of the Army, Navy and Air Force.
Maj Gen Kaul got the distinction of being personally awarded with this peace time medal by the Hon’ble President of India on the Republic Day.
The VSM was instituted in 1960 as VSM Class III before it was renamed in 1967. This medal received by Maj Gen TK Kaul is made of bronze, is circular in shape, 35 mm in diameter, and has a five-pointed star embossed on its obverse. On its reverse is the State Emblem and the inscription embossed along the upper rim.
The medal suspends from a straight horizontal bar. The gold coloured ribbon attached to it has three dark blue stripes which run down, dividing it into four segments.
The VSM can also be granted posthumously, and subsequent awards are represented by a bar worn on the ribbon. The award carries with it the right to use ‘V.S.M.’ as designatory letters to one’s name. Maj Gen Tej Kaul is endowed not just with these hallowed medals of honour, but also with the courage and grit to call for peace between the two warring nations of Pakistan and India.
