The coveted Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) is awarded for 'distinguished service of the exceptional order', and is open to all ranks of officers of the Army, Navy and Air Force.
This military award bestowed upon Maj Gen T Kaul is for gallantry, and is awarded during peace time. Maj Gen Kaul was personally felicitated by the Hon’ble President of India.
The AVSM was instituted in 1960 as VSM Class II before it was renamed in 1967. The AVSM medal received by Maj Gen TK Kaul is made of silver, is circular in shape, 35 mm in diameter, and has a five-pointed star embossed on its obverse. On its reverse is the State Emblem and the inscription embossed along the upper rim.
The medal suspends from a straight horizontal bar. The gold coloured ribbon attached to it has two dark blue stripes which run down, dividing it into three segments.
The award carries with it the right to use ‘A.V.S.M.’ as post nominal initials to one’s name. Many such medals adorned the uniform of Gen Tej Kaul, who brought honour and pride to his country. Today, Maj Gen T Kaul is the current Executive President of the IPSI, a body that is intent on striking the gong of peace for India and Pakistan.
